Our Emily's got herself a Gangsta streak, really hasn't she? If it's not the PO'lice, it's the Bro's, or indeed, the Ho's. This just feeds my fantasy of a gangsta dance off between Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire.

Finally saw Clean

Right. So it is a pretentious arthouse film that meanders around aimlessly for a few hours between three countries and still goes, essentially, nowhere. But a pretentious meandering arthouse film with Metric in it, and, appropriately, the first fifteen minutes are a big Metric love-in. They get the job describing the lead character – Emily, a prickly Canada-based muso type who pisses people off just by looking at them. Hmm. Nope, doesn't ring a bell. Anyway, so our rockstar chums attend a Metric show in between lots of drugs. The members of Metric then discuss the plot among themselves at length for our benefit – Emily’s a smackhead, says Emily, and has dumped their son Jay on Lee’s parents. Emily's son J. You following? Metric by the way, are unlikely to be hassling Oscar contenders anytime soon, but they would have gotten away far handier had they not been dealt such bizarrely awkward dialogue. Anyway…

After the show, which seems to be just Metric playing Dead Disco over and over and over again in scummiest divehole in Canada, Lee and Emily (The singer character, not the singer’s character) have a row, and shoot up. Lee overdoses and dies, Emily gets sent down for six months for possession. Six mois plus tard, Emily is told by Lee’s dad not to come looking for Jay until she gets – altogether now – Clean, and our already confused tiny brains are now asked to accept Nick Nolte as the patron saint of clean living. Emily flees to Paris and we’re all speaking French now. France is of course, full of mad lesbians, because hey, that’s just France. After lots of “Oh things might get a little better… oh, no they’ve not. Is Tricky gonna help her? Oh, no he’s not. Hey things are now marginally better! Oh no, it’s all crap again.” And so on. Will she get to see her son again? Will she overcome the crapness of real life and get back to the music industry which is, as we’ve already seen, also crap? And do we care?

It’s diverting. Strangely compelling, despite the fact that sod all actually happens, and this is largely due to the cast. Cheung is just one of those compelling people, and the camera’s obsessive clingyness to her is all that keeps you distracted from the pummelling you’re getting from the DRUGS ARE BAD!!! Message. But it’s Nick Nolte who runs away with it. He’s outstanding, an unfailingly decent curmudgeon who respects Emily precisely for her irrational refusal to face the real world, and he in turn is so good he distracts you from his role as a big honkin' Deus Ex Machina. He’s great, and him and his beard are no doubt what got this movie the Cannes kudos. He’s just hypnotic. Yay for Nick Nolte.

But best of all, nestled in the special features, is an interview with the very different Metric of some years ago. It's the pre-Noir style Metric. Josh has Rio Ferdinand baby-dreadlocks, Jimmy’s wearing a t-shirt, Joules looks about twelve, and Emily has apparently somehow gotten younger since then. Their musiings – that music is just as addictive and destructive a mistress as any narcotic – are interesting, but the movie sadly fails to explore that idea. Music destroyed Emily the first time round. Are we supposed to hope she gets back to it? Isn’t that just transferring her dependency?

Nah, Haines might pick up on that idea, but for all the film does with it, the Music/ Drugs parallel might as well be a total accident. It’s a waste of an interesting chance – like the director wanted to explore it, but chickened out. So instead, it’s like a very long visual tribute to the ambient stylings of the music of Brian Eno. Lovely, but aimless, so unless you really like long shots bluey grey skies and/or Metric… it’s not one to blow anybody away.
