Hooray!

I'm ignoring the naysayers!

One shortlist for you, Metric. You go, Metric!

RE: Fantasies/OWU- I still maintain that Fantasies is their best album yet...

That list makes me want to hurl. I am fucking pissed with this.

I just think it's completely unfair to give half the nominations to repeat nominees, and honestly there were way more albums on the long list that deserved a spot up there. I'm still happy and proud of most of them but come on, folks - you could've done better.

Not to knock the repeats; some of them do have fantastic records. Go Chad Vangaalen! That man really should've won the first time - but then again, I love Owen Pallett and was happy he won instead.

I'm not familiar with any of the bands but Metric, so I can't really give a fair opinion, but it does seem sort of terrible that no new artists were nominated. I mean, it's a cash prize, and I think a band like Metric is in less need of the money than an upstart. IDK.

Yeah, honestly all of those bands are fairly financially sound, compared to some of the others on the short list. People like Metric (no offense) and Patrick Watson (who already won) don't need the money as much as a band like $100 or Think About Life (yes, I'm super biased because I love the band but they could really use that money). And it's unfair that they claim to want to help out bands at the same time as awarding them with this money because they just picked all the bands that regardless of the prize is doing pretty damn well right now. Fucking hell. They're doing nothing special by just picking the same artists y'know.

Land of Talk...?
GO CHAAAAAAAAAD!!
And Hey Rosetta!

Also, now I know why you guys said you don't want Metric to win. I kinda forgot that it was a cash prize, lol. Metric seems pretty well off ever since Fantasies.

I gotta comment all on all of this (and you all KNOW I will).

Metric made the shortlist (and Joel Plaskett :D ), and it seems that no one here is at all happy about it. Giving nominations to artists who have been nominated before (Metric included, they've even been shorlisted previously for Live It Out I think), really isn't something that can be changed, because every awards ceremony of any kind has done it.

Does that make it any less fair for that person / those people to win? I don't think so. If you're an independent artists who made a good album (though me and jayb seem to be the only ones who think Metric made a good album), then you deserve a nod.

In regards to the point that a lot of these artists don't really need the cash (again, Metric included)... I think that's also a pretty irrelevant point. From the PMP FAQ sectoin:

How are the nominees decided? What is the criteria?

The 40-title Long List and the 10-title Short List are voted on by the jury based on their own tastes and determinations. They pick their ballot celections bases on what their individual criteria for best album is. We do not have a scorecard for lyrics, production, height, length, smell or anything of the sort.

Do you have any quotas? Sales caps? Anything like that?

Nope. None. Nada.

The award is not given to an emergent artist who is in need of $20, 000. The award is given to someone who made a good record REGARDLESS of budgets, marketing savvy, sales etc. etc. etc.

Please understand that I am NOT begrudging anyone here for not wanting Metric on the shortlist. That is your opinion and I will not attempt to change it. This is just how I feel about the reasons that have been given.

In other news, JOEL PLASKETT WOOH! :D

Man, you'd think we were on the anti-Metric forum with a comment like that. :?

Here's the thing: money aside, that's not the best of the longlist. Plain and simple. They could've done better. Yeah, there are some great albums on the list but nothing that I would call 'the best'. Well maybe Chad Vangaalen; love him, love the record. There were plenty of fantastic records on the long list that trumps some of the shortlisters is all I'm sayin'.

And the money aspect - totally a biased thought. Not related to the point of of the prize, I know.

I'm happy for Metric but honestly, I didn't think it was the best record by any stretch in comparison to other records. That's all we're saying when we say we'd "cut a bitch" (I love you, Christine!) if they win. I mean, take a look at the longlist again, folks. Lots of great stuff there.

YEAH AND WHERE THE HELL IS LAND OF TALK?

I'm such a contradictory person. I just argued my ass off in Metric's defense, and yet still this little voice in my head is whispering...

So any albums besides Fantasies that the forum is upset to see on the shortlist?

EDIT: In case you can't answer this question, feel free to argue with me about this (because we all know I love to argue :) )

The gala is being broadcast on MuchMusic and MuchMusic.com, for those us who won't be going (hopefully there will be a contest to attend the gala or something).
