So I think that Portsinger was right. The committee chose Fucked Up in order to silence the award's critics.
Well, to be fair, I wasn't saying that I think Fucked Up was chosen simply
because the Polaris jury didn't want to be accused of picking the same type of music/musician every damn year. I was merely saying that I don't think very many news sources will criticize this choice because they'll like that it's different.
I honestly don't know why the jurors chose Fucked Up. Maybe it was a bit of "we have to pick something different!" (Though if they were going to pick something totally different, they could have also tried picking a woman. Or a visible minority. I'm just saying!) (And yes, I do think that it's kind of problematic that so few women have ever been included in the Polaris short lists, but that's another discussion for another day.) Maybe it was because they genuinely felt that it was the best album on the list. It's not my cup of tea, but, you know...whatevs. I haven't agreed with the jurors since they awarded Final Fantasy the very first prize.
Ultimately, it's kind of a subjective decision. You might not be so into Fucked Up, but obviously, someone out there is. To international music fans, Nickelback is one of Canada's most notable exports. Celine Dion is supposedly a legend, as far as Canadian female singers go. Alexisonfire just got awarded the Album of the Year award at the Verge Music Awards (and they were up against Joel Plaskett and Metric!). These are things I will never, ever understand. But guess what? Apparently, there are people out there who think all of this makes sense. You know why? BECAUSE IT'S SUBJECTIVE, whether I like it or not.
So the band you were rooting for didn't win. GET OVER IT. They probably already have.
